Candid Arts, Islington, London, UK
Thunder, Canal, Studio, Ferry, Pool was created in the summer of 2011 and shown as part of a group show at Candid Arts in Islington, London, from the 14th to the 19th September 2011. The work consists of five photographic images mounted on box-type frames. From each photo-box hangs a set of headphones. The box frames conceal portable CD players, playing back on a loop the sound recordings corresponding to each image. The work is mains powered and the power cables that run down the wall from the images to the mains extensions at the foot of the wall, also have an aesthetic function in rooting the images.
The work deals with a number of themes relating to movement, activity, the passing of time and presence. The work encourages careful listening to the binaural recordings of the different environments, whilst providing a starting point for the listening experience in the form of the corresponding photographs taken in the places that each of the recordings were made. The title of the work also provides similar situational guidance in the form of single words relating to the sound-image pairings.
