About
''Beautiful acoustic melodies, rich luscious vocals, delicate guitar and cello blend together in Mika's songs of life, love, and dreams.''

Somewhere, somewhere amidst all the chatter about nu folk there lies a twinkling gem. Mika Sellens, with her gentle, lulling, cashmere melodies, is that jewel. This twentysomething troubadour creates music as soft as cotton wool, velvet-voiced and dreamlike. She sings, she muses, she meanders through words about love and longing with only guitar, cello and double bass for company.

What is the geneaology of such spellbinging musical reverie? Mika was born in Camden London and grew up lost in music. Her father played blues guitar and her earliest memories were played out to a soundtrack of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Sandy Denny, and Christy Moore. It was a form of escapism, growing up in the grey grey streets of London: listening to the decidely rural strains of guitar and voice, of pretty little bedtime stories, of blue skies and yellow taxis and green green fields. Soon she was making music too, learning piano and flute, starting to write songs aged 10 and getting her first acoustic guitar at 13. By 17 she was fronting the Norwich-based indie band Nova, playing electric guitar and singing. The future was starting to take shape.

Mika Sellens played her first solo acoustic gig in 1999 at the Kashmir Klub. Around the same time she was studying composition at Goldsmiths: learning about the traditions of classical and avant garde and tracing the roots of her own guitar and voice focussed singer songwriting.

Slowly, surely her assured live performances built up a word of mouth following. The subliminal, subtle and sublime of Mika's music was being transmitted around the nooks and grottoes of London's nightworld. She played at Bush Hall and at The Electroacoustic Club; The Halfmoon in Putney and The Hackney Empire and all the while there was the low level persistent hum of the appreciative audience, welcoming the dips and curls of her meandering tunes.

By 2003 she'd been spotted by (Levis ad soundtracking) Finnish duo Pepe Deluxe. They asked her to sing on and co-write their 2004 single Lying Peacefully and she did, lending a chocolatey warmth to this languid piece of noughties blues. The single was licensed to both Hed Kandi's Winter Chill compilation and Paul Oakenfolds Perfecto Chill long player and the rest is history.

So to 2007, a new EP, Back Home EP, on her newly founded record label Little Doll Records. Mika Sellens has arrived with a very beatific and beautiful sound. Listen and be lulled.
